GST (Goods and Service Tax) and Beyond |
| Programme Detail |
|
Context:
In India, at present, there are parallel systems of indirect taxation at the central and state levels. Each of the systems needs to be reformed to eventually harmonize them. In the Union Budget for the year 2006-2007, Finance Minister proposed that India should move towards national level Goods and Services Tax that should be shared between the Centre and the States. April 1, 2010 is the date for introducing GST.
It is believed that, GST once introduced will create a common market across the length and breadth of the country which will give a fillip to the GDP growth. Also, the introduction of GST is expected to have a salutary impact on total tax collections, employment and fiscal deficit.
"Preparedness"- The need of the hour:
GST is going to change the way FMCG and other manufacturing companies do business in India. Companies have to be better prepared for its rollout and make their processes
(IT, business, etc) stronger well before GST implementation.
Once GST is in place, these sectors will be relieved of the twin problems of higher and multiple taxation. The impact on FMCG sector will be different, because after GST, the need for maintaining several warehouses across the states will be removed. This is big scope for FMCG companies to reengineer their operations, logistics and ERP systems.
